Saves The Day catch up with Chemical Magazine to talk ‘Daybreak’, the music industry & why they love touring Europe, Check out the interview here…
Chemical Magaine: Hi, how are you?
Saves The Day: I’m doing quite well. Staring out the window of a coffee shop in Manchester watching the world go by.
Chemical Magaine: You are currently on tour with Yellowcard playing in cities all across Europe, how has that been for you?
Saves The Day: It’s fantastic! I absolutely love playing Europe. The fans over here are more interested in quality music instead of fleeting trends, and I feel more at home here onstage than in the states. True enough.
Chemical Magaine: You have released your new album ‘Daybreak’ earlier this year, how has the reaction been from your fans?
Saves The Day: We’re thrilled with the response from our fan base, and finding that the new material goes over quite well live. It’s cathartic to sing the songs each night and connect on a deep level with our fans, and it’s a source of inspiration for me searching for the heart of humanity in a complex world.
Chemical Magaine: Considering you’ve been around since 1994, how do you feel the music industry has changed over recent years?
Saves The Day: Actually, the band that I started in ’94 didn’t turn into Saves until ’97, when we made our first demo and album. Since then, I’ve seen so many ups and downs that I know to find my balance and center inside myself as opposed to looking outside for approval and appreciation. When I first started, there was no notion of fame in the underground music scene, it was of the people for the people. In the early 2000′s, the whole thing exploded and suddenly we had emo stars and haircuts. People started bands searching for the limelight instead of following their passion for self-expression. The music became hollow and vacant. The stars faded. Honest music is on the rise again, but it’s back underground. The industry itself has reacted to trends as it naturally does being a business based on profits, but it’s scrambling at the moment to find authentic music that connects in an honest and powerful way. I wish them the best of luck!

Chemical Magaine: Which song on Daybreak would you say was the most enjoyable to record and perform?
Saves The Day: “E” was a monster to record and went through many changes on its way to finding itself. The finished product is my favorite song on the album and I love to sing it onstage, but so far “1984″ is my favorite song to play in concert because the words are therapeutic and the chorus inspires me to find my humanity and forgive myself and the world for our shortcomings.
Chemical Magaine: How do the UK fans compared to the fans you have back home in America?
Saves The Day: We have absolutely wonderful fans all over the world who connect with the heart of our music and the depth of our words, but the fans in the UK and Europe for the most part seem to have a mature musical intelligence that is a relief for an artist based in a material culture such as the one in America.
Chemical Magaine: You have had the privilege of touring with many well known and loved bands, are there any bands in particular you haven’t toured with but would love to?
Saves The Day: I would be thrilled to tour with The Foo Fighters and Radiohead, but it’s a bit far fetched, isn’t it? Muse and Queens Of The Stone Age would also be fantastic. On a more realistic level, Sunny Day Real Estate is one of my all time favorite bands, and I would give almost anything to share the stage with them.
Chemical Magaine: Do you have any upcoming news on releases/tours you can share with us?
Saves The Day: We have some good stuff cooking for next year, but as of now, I’m only able to tell you about Soundwave in Australia which we will be playing in February. We’re doing two sets a day on that tour; one set of originals, and one set covering the entirety of Pinkerton by Weezer. Fun!
Chemical Magaine: Do you have any messages for your fans?
Saves The Day: I love you and I feel you in my heart and my dying wish would be for you to find peace within yourself and to learn to forgive those who have hurt you, and the world at large for its confusion and its injustice. See you in the stars!
